New York State and Gay Marriage

What You Need to Know About Gay Marriage in New York

By Kathy Belge, About.com

Is Gay Marriage Legal in New York State?

Same-sex couples who are married in states where gay marriage is recognized will also have their marriage recognized by New York State.

Gay and lesbian couples cannot yet legally marry in the state of New York, but if married in a state like Massachusetts or Connecticut, they will receive all the state rights and privileges of marriage in New York.

Remember, because of the Defense of Marriage Law, gay and lesbian couples are not eligible for federal marriage benefits, only state-wide ones.
