Where Can Gays and Lesbians Get Civil Unions or Domestic Partnerships?

By Kathy Belge, About.com

Question: Where Can Gays and Lesbians Get Civil Unions or Domestic Partnerships?

Where can gays and lesbians get married or civil unions in the United States?

Answer:

Gay Marriage:

Only one state allows gay marriage: Massachusetts.

Civil Unions:

Civil unions are allowed in Connecticut, New Jersey and Vermont. Civil unions allow all of the state level benefits of marriage to gay couples.

Domestic Partnerships:

California, District of Columbia and Maine allow domestic partnerships. Domestic partnerships allow some, but not all of the benefits and responsibilities of marriage to gay couples.

Reciprocal Beneficiaries

Hawaii has a reciprocal beneficiaries law that allows some spousal-like rights.
